Consumer Beware
Have You Ever Heard Of Bait-n-Switch? It is
that time of year again that you start thinking about getting your carpets
professionally cleaned. It is also the time that you will probably start
seeing coupons in the newspapers or in the mail advertising a price of
$6.95 - $9.95 per room to have your carpets cleaned. Sounds like a pretty
good deal, right? If you said yes without any hesitation or thought, you have
taken the first step to being a victim of the "Bait-n-Switch" scam. The
companies that use this technique have one thing in mind and that is to get
you to call them and get them into your home and commit to a cleaning contract.
Once inside your home, the salesperson will inform you that the coupon you
have is an advertised price for a "basic steam cleaning" (in other words,
using nothing but plain water) and then they will ask you if you would like
to redeem the coupon and sign a cleaning contract. Once this smooth talking
salesperson gets you to commit, the real purpose of their visit begins - "the
upsell". They will mention the spots in your carpet and ask if you would
like them removed. They will also probably mention a pre-treatment and an
"additive" to clean the carpets better (in other words, the actual
solutions needed to clean the carpet) and they will try real hard to get
you to get a carpet protectant or deodorizer. All these extra add-ons are
additional charges to the "basic steam cleaning" and before you know it, the
$6.95 - $9.95 per room carpet cleaning job you just signed up for has
actually cost you up to $75.00 per room. These businesses are routinely
sued (if they can be found) due to these tactics, go out of business rapidly,
and resurface every year under a new name.
If you give it some serious
thought, a reputable carpet cleaning company has the cost of cleaning
solutions, spotting solutions, equipment, labor, travel expenses and overhead
to calculate into the price per room that is charged. At today's gas prices,
$6.95 - $9.95 per room would be a losing proposition for ANY carpet cleaning
company. Save yourself a lot of trouble and Don't be taken in by
"Bait-n-Switch" companies!
